     President's Message
GHSON Alumni Presidents Message

Prepared by Robert J. Meadus, PhD, RN (Class of 1978)

Greetings from the President

Hi to all of our alumni members, I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. This has been a very challenging year for so many people at the local, national, and international level. This global pandemic has greatly impacted our day to day lives and continues to influence the world in many ways. The executive members [Kathy Adey, Elaine Carew, & Lynn Power] and I are thinking about you and are working on several activities of the General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni.

The Scholarship Committee that was struck in 2018 to investigate the process for transfer of funds to Memorial University of Newfoundland has completed their work. The Committee members consisting of all executive members and also Pamela Baker, Merlee Steele-Rodway, Bertha Scofield, and Jeanette Walsh met several times over the past year. The Gift Agreement for the General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment fund [$65,000] was finalized on April 30, 2021. The scholarships from the fund will support nursing students in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) who complete their undergraduate degree in nursing at Memorial University of NL.

As you are aware due to the influence of pandemic restrictions the annual alumni dinner did not take place in 2020. Unfortunately, due to the restrictions the dinner for 2021 will also not take place. We know that this is disappointing news as the dinner provides an opportunity for members to get together with their classmates, who have not seen each other, to come together and reminisce about the days of being a student at the “General.” It looks like the next dinner will occur in October 2022 and I am sure everyone will be looking forward to that event!

The General Hospital School of Nursing Alumni financial audit was also completed this year and the statement of revenue and expenditures will be presented at the next dinner meeting in 2022.

I would also like to thank all members who have made donations to the alumni over this past year, much appreciated. The Executive members and I also want to extend our sincere condolences to families and friends of those graduates who passed away during this past year. I want also to thank all of our members who are working on behalf of the alumni this year, members who support the Alumni Office [Jeanette Walsh, Betty Good], and Susan Walsh [Dinner organizer]!
If you wish to print a membership form, and pay your fee for fall 2021 go to the web at www.ghsonalumni.ca Keep well and Stay Safe.

Respectfully submitted,
president
Dr. Robert J. Meadus, PhD, RN CPMHN(C) [Class of 1978]
